Oscar – The Brazilian Prodigy

Oscar – The Brazilian Prodigy

The young Brazilian has enjoyed a promising first season in the Premier League following his £20 million to Chelsea from boyhood Brazilian club Internacional in the summer. Oscar was given the number 11 shirt when he signed for the club, the shirt previously worn by Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, but has he just  been given a shirt number with even bigger boots to fill?

In the last twenty years the Brazilian number 10 has been given to some exceptionally talented players. The shirt is usually given to a creative midfielder who is capable of both creating and scoring goals with recent recipients including Kaka, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Zico and Pele. This is certainly a tough act to follow and Brazil believe Oscar is the player to do it. The young Chelsea attacking midfielder was recently handed the number 10 shirt and will follow in the foot steps of some of the world’s greatest ever players.

The 21 year-old attacking midfielder has made quite an impression since his big money move from Internacional in the summer. Despite only featuring in half of Chelsea’s matches this season the young Brazilian has shown he is more than capable of succeeding at the top level. The free role he is given at Chelsea suits his style of play and allows him to link up well with other Chelsea play makers Juan Mata and Eden Hazard to form a formidable attack.

Oscar has also been performing well for Brazil, who have just played back to back friendlies against two of the top sides in the world; Italy and Russia. Oscar started both of these matches and proved that he has what it takes to compete on the international stage too. He followed on from a well taken goal against the Italians by putting in a fantastic performance against Russia at his club’s home ground, Stamford Bridge.

The creative midfielder certainly has all of the attributes needed to be successfully and follow on from these great players. He has pace, agility, vision, balance and technical ability, all of which make him a very promising young prospect for both Chelsea and Brazil.

It is seen as an honour to wear the number 10 shirt and unsurprisingly Oscar is delighted with the announcement. When speaking to Chelsea’s club website he expressed his happiness by saying “To wear the number 10 for your country is a very special thing, this was not only my dream, but the dream of every single Brazilian.”
